Does Visor First Time Influence Your Horse Racing Tips? | James Dooley Asks Joe Norris From Get Your Tips Out
**James Dooley says**
So, Joe the Get Your Tips Out preferred horse racing tipster. The application of a visor. Is that a positive in your opinion or a negative when you're trying to choose a horse?
**Joe Norris says**
Again, I do like this angle sometimes, but it's situation dependent. If a horse is out of form and coming back down the handicap, that's when I start to look for it. When they reach for the first-time visor, I feel like that can be a profitable angle. But like everything, you have to take other factors into account. I won't back it blind. It’s just a starting point when I’m looking at the race, and then you dig deeper into it.
**James Dooley says**
Yeah, sometimes when you apply the visor for the first time, it can make the horse more alert and make them think “right, okay, let’s do this”. But the fact that the trainer has had to try something new does make you wonder whether the horse will actually go through with it and win the race. I still see it as a positive, especially if they’re coming down the weights and the trainer feels the visor could help them find improvement. If they’re on a winning mark, I look at it and think, hang on, they've done this for a reason.
**Joe Norris says**
Yeah, and you can dig deeper into the stats. Certain trainers have better strike rates when they apply a visor. That’s a key thing to check. But I agree with you. When the horse is dropping down the handicap, that’s the moment I look for it.
**James Dooley says**
For sure. I always look at the horse racing stats like you mentioned, trainer by trainer. Some yards look for certain angles like headgear, first-time blinkers, or the first run after wind surgery. At some stables these changes genuinely signal improvement. So yeah, great point on the visor. Whether they’re applying it or not, it’s about working out whether it could realistically yield improvement.
